Steele’s course record 64 tees up PGA Europro Tour victory at Burhill Golf Club

3 June 2010

Robert Steele won The Pandora 2010 Open at Burhill Golf Club in Surrey, May 26-28, on the first play-off hole against Sean Doherty to win the second event of the 2010 PGA EuroPro Tour.

Steele (Kenilworth/Forest of Arden) fired a second round 64 to set a new course record on Burhill’s beautifully presented New Course on route to securing the winner’s cheque of £10,000.

Level par opening and closing rounds meant his eight under par second round was the one that counted, but on a course in such terrific condition, low scores were always a possibility.

Doherty (Bury GC) began the final day at five under par but shot into real contention immediately with a birdie-birdie start. A third birdie at the fifth moved him to eight under par and two further birdies saw him move to ten under through 16.

However, a bogey-bogey finish left him tied with Steele and the pair went down the par-three 18th again in a play-off. In front of a large crowd, gathered by the impressive Georgian mansion clubhouse, Doherty replicated his three-putt in regulation tournament action to bogey the hole again, meaning Steele’s solid par was enough for the win to put him on track for a strong showing.

It was the second consecutive year Burhill Golf Club has hosted a Europro Tour event, once again sponsored by Pandora Jewellery and run in conjunction with the Professional Golfers Association and Matchroom Sports.

A total of 168 aspiring players took part, hoping to win a place on the European Tour’s Challenge Tour.

Robert Steele said: “I would like to thank Burhill Golf Club on behalf of all the players for such great hospitality and fantastic course conditions – the greens were amazing.”

Danny Nickless, PGA Europro Tour Operations Manager added: “The team at Burhill has once again organised a splendid week.We were well over subscribed for participation as the professionals love playing here.”
